Man pleads for mercy, gets prison term for eighth OWI

A man found guilty at trial last week for a repeat count of driving while intoxicated dropped to his knees and begged the court for mercy during his sentencing hearing Tuesday before Langlade County Judge Fred Kawalski.

“I will not fail this court...I will not fail society,” 53-year-old Michael Dettlaff pleaded, asking for a minimum sentence which would include treatment for his alcohol addiction.

The conviction was the 53-year-old’s eighth and stemmed from an arrest in August when he had a blood alcohol level of .31 percent, nearly four times the prohibited limit...
