Treasurer's race include northwoods man who wants to be hired, fired

A northwoods candidate calling for elimination of the office he is trying to obtain makes for a more-interesting-than-usual race for state treasurer.

Jerry Shidell, one-time mayor of Rhinelander, is running for treasurer as a Libertarian, with a slogan of “Hire Me-then-Fire Me.”

It’s the main issue in both the state treasurer and secretary of state races, with candidates questioning whether the offices should exist at all — and how to make them matter if they’re kept around.
