January is National Stalking Awareness Month, and with stalking playing a part in recent high-profile domestic violence homicides in Wisconsin, advocates here say there is urgency to raising awareness about this dangerous behavior.
“Locally, stalking is a routine occurrence in many of the abuse cases we see,” Michele Arrowood, executive director of AVAIL Inc., an advocacy agency for victims of domestic and sexual abuse, said. “Law enforcement does an excellent job of recognizing and trying to address the issue; however, some stalking behaviors stop short of being criminal activity or even obvious harassment, which limits the remedies available to victims.”
