Spring Valley Elementary is among eight public educational facilities in Wisconsin being honored as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
The awards, announced Tuesday afternoon, were received by just 337 schools across the nation. Recipients were chosen based on overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps.
Tollef Wienke, school principal, said students heard the news this morning through a video and an announcement. A larger celebration is planned after the official awards ceremony held in Washington D.C. on Nov. 10 and 11.
